Dave Kernohan in his own words

Early life

I am Davey Kernohan – Guitar & Backing Vocals  I grew up close to Belfast city and my passion for music began around 10 yrs of age. An old acoustic my dad once owned used to sit dusty in our dining room corner. Back then indie was becoming a real trend and artists like blur and oasis were all over the radio. I bought a basic guitar book and started to get to grips with that acoustic.

Before long I was churning out my own ideas and soon got a cheap electric guitar with my birthday money. By that stage writing music was a big part of my life, I spent hours with several tape recorders trying to lay down tunes, by recording to one, then playing it back whilst adding in other bits and recording that on another! It was complicated but it worked well at the time!
I was a big hit at school as myself and another guy who played drums used to play in the assembly hall on our big stage over lunchtimes, and the crowds would gather to listen. It was then I first got a real taste of performing to crowds and I loved every minute.
Shortly after I left school I started to scout the local papers and music shops to find a band, and after joining and leaving many bands I finally came across some of the members of what is now Nine Lies.

Life in the band

My favourite part of the band is the different musical tastes and influences that come together to create what we do… the variation in our musical backgrounds gives us a great combination of sounds and song ideas and riffs, with no 2 songs sounding the same.
Life is good in Nine Lies, we have a great time working up new ideas and recording demos of them, and there’s always a buzz in the air and u leave practice on a natural high after the excitement of a new rockin’ tune at the door.
Best thing I think is marrying my beautiful wife Emma, (boke I know!) who also takes a keen interest in the band and our music and gives us good encouragement and feedback on what we do.

Tradgedy

The worst would probably be the major car accident I had when I was 18, I broke 2 bones in my neck, punctured my lung and broke 2 ribs after a head on collision at 60mph, and was inches away from either losing my life or becoming a paraplegic. I spent about 8 months in an upper body cast after, and was a very uncomfortable time in my life.

Academic achievements and hobbies

I studied architecture at Queen’s University Belfast, and also at Oxford Brookes University in London. I am a very active person who likes to keep busy. I have many hobbies and interests outside of music and writing. I have a keen interest in electronics and how things work (usually involves taking stuff apart even if it’s not broke!) and I also work on cars a bit too.

I spend a lot of time with DIY and I try to have a go at as many things in life as I can. I also like to spend time keeping fit as well, playing racket sports, cycling, running and going to the gym.

Aspirations

In 5 years time I’d hope to be playing to big crowds and have a dedicated fan base that come to our shows regularly and hopefully be signed to a major label and to be doing music as a full time career.
